David HB Drake has
spent over 25 years telling the story of the Midwest in history, lore,
and legend through folk music, multimedia, and spoken word. His work has
been recognized through Parents' Choice, WAMI Family Music Artist of the
Year, and Midwest Folk Alliance Life Achievement Awards. He tells the tales of the Great Lakes as a professional sailor/historian aboard the Wisconsin flagship, the schooner "Denis Sullivan" and immigration in his "Gather by the Waters" and "Sailor's Songbag" programs. He presents the history of Wisconsin and Illinois, illustrated through songs, stories, and slides in his multimedia programs ("Wiscon-sing" and "Heartland"). He presents family programs for fun and sharing ("Kidstuff" and "Gather the Family"), living in peace together and the environment ("What a Wonderful World"), heritage ("American Songbag"), reading ("The Illustrated Song"), faith ("Let There be Light" and "A Joyous Noise") and for elders and communities ("Potluck"). Many of these programs are available on CD. (Visit his website for sound clips.) David performs on guitar, as well as handmade concertina, dulcimer, banjo, and Native American Flute, weaving a web of tales that end in sing-alongs and portraits in song of our heritage and home. For festival events with a "sense of place," David can appear in appropriate costumes and with visual props to enhance the experience. He is also available through the Wisconsin Humanities Council Chautauqua Speakers Bureau. Please visit David's website for the whole story! |
