Wiscoveries! Reports of great storytelling discovered in Wisconsin's hidden venues |
Ten Chimneys, Genesee Depot, WI — This 1930s-40s country estate,
home of legendary Broadway stars Alfred Lunt and
Lynn Fontanne, has been restored with original décor, furnishings and memorabilia. Tours are conducted in small groups of 8-10 guests and led by docents thoroughly familiar with the history of this unique and enchanting retreat. What makes this tour especially memorable is the quality of the storytelling that the docents offer as they conduct people through the house and grounds. They are required to absorb vast amounts of historic information, but it's far from dry facts. The stories seem to spring from the walls. The anecdotes and vignettes of Alfred and Lynn’s life at Ten Chimneys flow easily as the various rooms and mementos are viewed. It is as if the docents themselves had been privileged to witness the goings on during those many idyllic summers. The tales almost sound like personal stories. Kudos to Teri Plewa, who directs the docent program. She has imparted to her volunteers a fine sense of storytelling.
